Sex Positions for Using Toys

6 min read · With a partner & solo

A toy is only as good as your ability to comfortably reach the right spot with it. The right position does half the work — it frees a hand, improves the angle, and takes the strain out of things. Here’s a practical, tasteful run-through by toy type.

Solo: comfort and reach

  • On your back, knees up. The classic for a reason — relaxed, and easy to reach everything with either hand.
  • On your front with a toy beneath you. Rest a bullet or small vibrator on a folded pillow and control it with your body weight — hands-free and very intuitive.
  • Propped up. Pillows under the hips tilt everything to a friendlier angle, especially for internal toys and finding the G-spot.

Couples: making room for a small toy

The trick with a bullet or slim vibrator is a position with a gap for it:

  • Spooning (little spoon). Rear-entry with a free front — the easiest way to add a toy to the clitoris during sex, for either partner to hold.
  • You on top. Whoever is on top controls pace and has a clear line to add a toy between you.
  • Missionary with a slim toy. A flat, flexible clitoral toy or a couples’ ring makes room where a chunky toy won’t.

Wands and broad toys

A wand is bigger, so give it space: rear-entry or you-on-top both leave room to bring a wand in from below or the front without a tangle.

Dildos and strap-ons

Angle is everything. Rear-entry and you-on-top give the best control and depth; on your back with hips propped is the most relaxed for beginners. Go slow, use plenty of lube, and let the receiving partner set the pace.

Tip: comfort first. If you’re straining to hold a position or a toy, the sensation suffers. Pillows are the cheapest sex-toy upgrade there is.

Common questions

What position is best for using a vibrator with a partner?

Spooning (little spoon) is the easiest — rear entry leaves the front open for either of you to hold a slim vibrator against the clitoris.

How do I use a toy hands-free?

Rest a bullet or flat vibrator on a pillow and use your body weight, or choose a toy with a suction base. Many couples’ toys are designed to stay put too.

What position is easiest for a first dildo?

On your back with a pillow under the hips — relaxed, good angle, and the receiving partner controls the pace. Plenty of lube is essential.
